Hot Volleyball Action Continuing - Semifinals this Friday
(The Valley, Anguilla) - On Friday evening the Webster Park Volleyball court was a center of excitement as teams vied for places in the Anguilla Development Board Volleyball league finals. In the first game the enigma known as the Sports Department judiciously defeated their opponent, team Statistics in two quick sets; 25, 15, 25, 19. Captain Ian ‘tucker” Connor lead the charge with good blocking and hitting but he was ably assisted by team mates Cleo Hamm, Lorenzo ‘Gadget’ Harrigan and Kya Cuffy. While Team Statistics was completely outplayed, players such as Adanija Richardson produced sterling efforts to help elevate his team’s moral.
In the second game the ANGLEC Shockers played Sunset homes in a very interesting game. ANGLEC’s leader, Justus “Bumsee” Connor increased the voltage but Sunset Homes was very defiant. Lester’ Fishy’ Connor along with Brandon Hennis tried scooping up every loose ball to assure their team a place in the second round. Unfortunately their work fell a few points short as ANGLEC won the game in two sets 25, 18; 25, 19.
On Saturday the once unstoppable volleyball force Construction, played the long arm of the law, Police. Team Construction out played Police in the first set with brilliant plays from Sherwin “Skywalker” Richardson, Tyrone “Sunkous” Benjamin and the Marsha twins. In the second set, there seem to be an epiphany as the Police came out playing really hard. Police showed their true abilities as they secured several points in succession. Suddenly there was a look of fear and trepidation on the faces of Team Construction. Randy ‘Swagart’ Thompson could only look and open his mouth, while the Marsha twins appeared to be on the brink of tears.
Under the captaincy of Darrel Gumbs team Police was about to do what only one other team has done this tournament, win a set from team Construction. With increasing crowd support, team Police became very excited and began making unforced errors. Unfortunately it led to their demise, as they lost the set and the game. The scores for the match were 25, 16 and 25, 23.
In the final game of the evening team Teachers, played MICUH in a match that can only be described as the best game thus far for the tournament. MICUH was off to the races, while team Teachers reacted like a deer frozen in the headlights of an on coming vehicle.
One could see Mr. Ken Banks and all the engineers with their calculators and pencils trying to figure out how to defeat the teachers. Momentarily it seemed to work as Eldon Webster began hitting the ball at will. However team Teachers struck back with good blocking from Perry Richardson and Simpson. As the set came near to an end, both teams were very pensive but as lady luck would have it Teachers prevailed. The second set was totally dominated by Teachers as they ran away with the set. It seemed like MICUH was “too cold” to play the game. The game ended with a 25, 23 and 25, 19 victory for team teachers.
