Friday’s cool evening and sporadic showers provided an ideal back drop for the Anguilla Development Board business league volleyball finals.

The ANGLEC Shockers with lack of depth opted to bring in two new players. Former national player, Susan Webster and former St. Lucian national player Max were recruited to fortify the ANGLEC Shockers and defeat the once mighty team Construction.

Team Construction, reeling from a defeat, came with the intention of redeeming their status as the best team in the tournament. They proceeded to devastate their opposition the ANGLEC Shockers in what could be described as a surgical performance. The towers of Tyrone “Sunkous” Benjamin and Sherwin “Skywalker” Richardson worked in tandem as they blocked and spiked the ball with no regard for their opponents. While this happened, Justus “Bumsee” Connor and Collin “Culture” Johnson tried to motivate their teams but it fell on deaf ears. The methodical devastation ended, with a two sets to zero win (25 - 19; 25 - 19) for team Construction.

In the second game the enigma, known as the Sports Department were expecting to dominate team Teachers. Well it was apparent the Teachers did not get the memo, as they fought tooth and nail to destroy the enigma. With hard effort, the Teachers came within several points of winning the first set primarily due to the hitting of Sipson, Khlaidah and Randal Lake. Realizing this, team captain Ian ‘Tucker’ Connor took charge of the game and saw his team home. In the second set Sports continued its dominant march but teachers stood resolved in their resistance. In fact the second set produced the best play of the game, as Ian ‘Tucker’ Connor pulverized a slam which was easily dug up by Dedra Bell, to the great applause of the crowd. This seem to have precipitated the inevitable as Sports defeated teachers with a score line of 25 - 22 and 25 -19.

On Saturday, Teachers and the ANGLEC Shockers played a tense game for third place. ANGLEC was operating at full voltage as they zapped the first set from teachers, due to numerous errors committed by them. However, with setters Khalidah and Connie running the helm, team teachers bounced back with some good hitting from Perry Richardson. With both teams tied with one set each both teams were desperate for a win of the third and final set. Teachers remained poised and were able to secure the third and decisive set. The score line for the game was 25, 20; 20, 25 and 11, 15.

In the Championship game the unstoppable force known as Construction played against the Sports Department in a thrilling finale. Both teams played well as they covered, spiked and bumped with effectiveness. However the mental toughness of the Sports Department prevailed, as they remained calm under pressure to win the first set. With no move to bring in the third member of the triple towers, Javelle “Special” Brooks, Construction seemed intent on using their experience.

It paid off as they were able to win the second set. The constant battle continued as Sports won the third set and Construction won the fourth set. With the fifth and final set in the balance all the players on the Sports Department rallied around Lorenzo “Gadget” Harrigan and Ian “Tucker” Connor, with defensive support for their good hitting. In the end, Sports won the set and a new champion was crowned with a score line of 25 -20; 24 - 26; 25 - 23; 20 - 25; and 15 -11.

The Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Anguilla Development Board for its continuous support of the business league and congratulations to the Sports Department for winning this year’s championship.
