ZHARNEL MAKES CARIFTA FINAL, SHINELLE EQUALS PERSONAL BEST & SHARA RANKED #2 IN THE WORLD!
During the recently held CARIFTA games in the Cayman Islands, Anguilla’s team of 3 athletes represented their country well.
Having to compete first, Zharnel Hughes gave team Anguilla a good start at the games by finishing 3rd in the semi-finals of the boys U-17 100m. Hughes crossed the line in a time of 10.99 seconds which allowed him to advance to the finals later that evening where he recorded a time of 11.44 seconds to place 8th out of the 16 competitors in the U-17 category.
Meanwhile 2008 & 2009 CARIFTA bronze medalist, Shinelle Proctor encountered stiff competition in the U-20 women’s high jump. Proctor, equaled her personal best, clearing a height of 1.70m which was enough to secure 5th in a field of 7 competitors, where 1.80m was the mark to beat by Jamaican athlete, Shanice Hall.
Kicio Welsh, representing Anguilla in the long jump, leapt to a distance of 6.65m before recording 2 consecutive fouls on his remaining jumps. Despite his difficulties, he managed to rank 12th among a field of 17 jumpers in the U-20 bracket.
Team Anguilla’s participation at the 39th CARIFTA games was made possible by LIME who sponsored US 5000.00 dollars to cover uniform and travel expenses. The team was accompanied by coach, Mrs. Wilma Proctor and team official Mr. Rollins Richardson. The 2011 CARIFTA games will be returning to the neighbouring island of St. Kitts who recently hosted it in 2008.
Shara Proctor, Anguilla’s World Champ Finalist in 2009, is currently ranked second in the World after her performance at the Florida Relays last weekend. Proctor opened her outdoor season with a leap of 6.63m which was the longest jump in the world this year until Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare knocked her from the number one spot with a distance of 6.88m at a meet in Austin Texas later that same day.
Shara is a senior athlete at the University of Florida and is looking to capture the Women’s Long Jump title at the upcoming NCAA championships later this year.
