ECVA under 21 boys volleyball championships day 1
A raucous crowd packed the YMCA volleyball indoor complex as the inaugural 2010 ECVA Junior Men’s Volleyball Championship exploded to a vibrant start. In the first game volleyball superpower,
St. Lucia, tried to make quick work of Antigua B. Both teams traded points in the early stages of the game. Unfortunately many unforced errors by Antigua B also gave the match to St. Lucia. The spiking and blocking of 6’ 4” Bassette sealed the deal for St. Lucia, ensuring a victory for them. The scores were 25, 16; 25, 16 and 25, 13. The St. Lucian Captain Gillan Octave was of the view this tournament is a serious mission and substandard efforts by his team are unacceptable. He further stated the team demonstrated strong mental resolve, a positive attitude and they will continue playing hard. Overall the captain was satisfied with the team effort. Coach Elvin Green concurred with his team captain in regards to team play and the positive attitude towards the game. He stated that as the team adapts to the surface the performances should improve.
In the second game of the evening Antigua A played against St. Eustatius. Moaning the defeat of their countrymen Antigua A were intent on setting things a-right. Good blocking by Warren (7) coupled with overall good team work proved to essential to Antigua 1. However St. Eustatius were equal to the challenge as they played with passion as they prevented most balls from falling on the court. The St. Eustatius coach stated team expectations were to break the ice and was satisfied with the performance and they kept improving with more sets. They will have some light work to address the serving errors and discuss tactics for the game. This is the first time his team has participated in an international competition so he is satisfied with the level of effort. The Antigua coach opined his team played well, however the true potential of his team has not been displayed as yet. The coach was pleased with the efforts of his middle blocker Alkris Warren and was impressed by the heights of some players in the tournament.
