(Sandy Ground, Anguilla) - Regatta time varies from place to place and in Anguilla it is as unique as it will ever be. The fascinating, passion filled boat race season culminates with the Champion of Champions race at the end of the summer festival every second week in August (In May 2011, catch the Anguilla Day Boat Race around the island, early in the season!)

This Sunday August 8, with the sun in all their glory the boats began to battle it out on the water. As soon as the horn blew signalling the start of the race, De Tree, poised and ready, took off with a powerful start, while some boats floundered, and other crews hustled to turn their boats around. De Tree took full advantage of the opportunity, and opened up a masterful lead, which they maintained throughout the race. However, Stinger and Sonic made sure De Tree couldn't relax as they kept the pressure on in their fight for first place. At one point, even the Real Deal seemed a potential contender, but they suffered a heart-wrenching breakdown just when they hit their stride. The crews battled each other all afternoon through high winds and choppy seas, bailing for what seemed like dear life! But De Tree was untouchable...unstoppable. In the end, De Tree sailed into the dual victory of achieving the titles "2010 Boat of the Year" and "2010 Champion of Champions".

  • 1st - De Tree  - this sailing beauty was first around the stake and first back, capturing the Champion of Champions trophy -again - and sealing its position as Boat of the year.

Crew on the Real Deal tried their best to counter problems on the water but in the end, as happens to just about each boat at sometime, it had to be towed back in, dejected crew aboard.

It  is an historic competition in Anguilla that was captured in a lovely story by an avid fan and contributing writer in these series of photographs.
