(The Valley, Anguilla) - Following on from the article released in June 2009, The Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources (DFMR) would like to announce the completion of public awareness materials relating to the imminent arrival of the invasive lionfish Pterois volitans.

To date no confirmed reports have been received of their presence in Anguillian waters, although over the last fifteen years they have spread easterly from Florida to the Virgin Islands, also reaching Bermuda, the Bay Islands and Bonaire.

It is only a matter of time before they continue across the Leeward Islands, reaching Anguilla, St Martin, St Kitts, and beyond. In light of this DFMR, in partnership with the Anguillian National Trust and the Department of Environment, have produced brochures and posters describing lionfish and their effect on people and the environment.

These materials have been distributed to many outlets around the island including the post office, library, dive shops, and some key tourist spots.

Copies can also be obtained by visiting the offices of the Anguillian National Trust, Department of Environment, Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, or the Marine Base at Road Bay. For further information, or to report a sighting, please email fisheriesmr@gov.ai call 4972871 or visit our office at the northerly end of Sandy Ground.
