(The Valley, Anguilla) - Anguilla's Wallblake Airport was renamed the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport in a ceremony at 3:00pm on Sunday July 4th.  "It's always good to witness history and no one should miss this historical name change" posted, Anguilla United Movement's (AUM) nominated member online in encouraging others to come out and witness the ceremony.

The name change is in keeping with part of the agenda of the AUM in setting in place the party's nationalistic imprint, now that they are at the reigns.

Quickly after taking office in the first quarter 2010, they fulfilled their promise to supporters by declaring March 2nd a holiday in honor of the revolutionary leader, the Hon.  James Ronald Webster, a move the former government had resisted.

With the renaming of the airport, the AUM removes the name of a former estate owner on the island, and installs that of a respected pioneer in local aviation.

I commend the AUM and the Government of Anguilla, as well as supporters of the movement to rename Anguila's airport to Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. Capt. Lloyd was a positive role model for many young
Anguillans who followed in his footsteps to successful career in aviation. Thank you AUM the Government of Anguilla and all those who supported this move.

Sad to say that the name change will not continue the dream that Clayton Lloyd had for Anguilla. We have not produced more than 10 pilots in the last 10 yrs because of the powers that be in certain positions in Anguilla. Anguilla use to be the only island in the Caribbean that produce more pilots per capita than any other island in the Caribbean. We have no national airline...we should be at ATR or Dash 8 levels...and all our pilots live in the U.S. or the Virgin Islands and have no incentive or support to come back home. I fear that Clayton's dream will never return.

"Sad to say", I agree with you, but we must keep hope alive. Back in the day, when we did for ourselves, owned our own businesses and took pride in bringing our own brand of services to Anguilla, we were much friendlier and conscious of what it meant to provide for our own needs.

However, that has been replaced by the high levels of consumerism that has bypassed that level of consciousness ownership and management. I am not going to cry doom yet. Why not take the bull by the horns, and see if you can get together with those of like mind and encourage Anguilla's young people to pursue careers in aviation. Lastly, I never like to say never. The fact that you brought this important fact up, and even though you lament the downfall of what has happened does not mean that Anguilla will not raise Capt. Lloyd's dream of an Anguillan owning and managing an airline company. Keep the dream alive.

The name change is fine, maybe they can change the name of the road to Clayton J. Llyod Avenue. Why would they add the 'International Airport' at the end. Alot of foreingners like myself would get the wrong idea about this.
