St. Kitts and Nevis to go to the polls on January 25th, 2010.
(St. Kitts, Leeward Islands) - Dr. Denzil Douglas, leader of the St. Kitts & Nevis Labour Party which has ruled that Eastern Caribbean Federation for the past 15 years tonight announced that election will be held in just over 2 weeks, on Monday, January 25th, 2010 with Nomination Day on Friday January 15th, 2010.
Though his announcement came after that of Osbourne Fleming in neighboring Anguilla, his selected date is 21 days earlier. In making the announcement he called upon 150 young people, each ringing a bell, to come forward and in festive style with fireworks in the air, officially kick off the campaign.
In an impassioned speech before party supporters with his ministers and candidates present, the Labour leader praised his parties actions over the past 15 years at the helm of St. Kitts and Nevis. He emphasized advances in Cruise Tourism, Housing and Land Ownership among the government's achievements.
"The labour train is moving forward and will not be stopped", he shouted as he predicted that the People's Action Movement (PAM) opposition will be heavily defeated.
Douglas announced that the Commonwealth of Nations has been invited in to observe the elections in addition to an 11 member team from the Organization of American States (OAS) and a team from Caricom to verify the fairness of the elections to ensue.
"Labour will win the next election", he said, further stating that at the end of these elections PAM will cry foul as they did in 1995, 2000, 2004 and, "2010 after they receive a ripping of their life they will cry foul again."
