National Youth Council Recruiting Youth Ambassadors
(The Valley, Anguilla) - The Anguilla National Youth Council in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Culture is in the process of recruiting young people between the ages of 18‐29 years for membership in the National Youth Ambassador Corps. The National Youth Ambassador Corps (NYAC) is a component of the National Youth Council’s Youth Empowerment programme. The programme seeks to create an enabling environment for youth participation within national and international decision‐making processes.
Youth Ambassadors are trained and organised to support the development and implementation of national development policy and to increase the capacity of young people for effective leadership and advocacy. To achieve this, youth ambassadors carry out the following functions:
- Represent the interests of young people in various public boards, committees, consultations and fora
- Research and document youth perspectives on development issues
- Educate young people about development issues
- Serve as a consultation mechanism for policy makers and development agencies
- Train young people to be leaders and advocates for youth development
In 2008 ‐ 2010 Youth Ambassadors planned and implemented the National Conference on Youth and Development, the Open Mic discussion on constitutional reform, and the Election Youth Rally 2010; they worked on teams developing a Child Protection Action Plan for Anguilla, conducting the review of Comprehensive Education in Anguilla, developing a Culture policy for Anguilla among others; and they represented the perspectives of Anguilla’s young people in Trinidad at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, in Suriname at the CARICOM heads of Government meeting, in the Commonwealth Regional Youth Caucus and the CARICOM `1`Youth Ambassador Programme.
Young person who are interested should meet the following criteria:
- Be 18‐29 years old on entry to the programme
- Have a history of active involvement and leadership in youth or community organisations
- Have a good academic and/or professional record
- Be able to commit for at least one year of service
- Be a belonger of Anguilla
- Be motivated and flexible to attend a range of activities locally, regionally/internationally(as required by assignment)
- Possess the ability to work independently and as a team
