Youth Ambassador, Eduardo Samuels, attends Ambassador
Orientation and Meeting of the CARICOM Commission on Youth
Development. |

13, 2007: Mr. Eduardo Samuel, CARICOM Youth Ambassador
for Anguilla, has recently participated in a series of
planning and capacity building workshops held in Jamaica
from 7-10 August, 2007. Mr. Samuels and his regional
colleagues also attended and participated in the second
meeting of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development which
was launched in 2007 to undertake research on Caribbean
Youth, with a view of making recommendations to the
Conference of Caribbean Heads of Government on a regional
strategy for youth empowerment, participation and
development.
Areas explored included the role, scope and function of the
CARICOM Youth Ambassador in supporting the work of the
CARICOM Youth Commission, as well as the development of
research terms of reference for a comprehensive situational
analysis on Adolescents and Youth ages 10-29. Additionally,
Youth Ambassadors were actively involved in the review of
the achievements of the programme in areas such as HIV/AIDS,
advocacy of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy, and
risk and vulnerability factors facing young people.
Presenters included, UWI lecturers, Dr. Barbara Braithwaite
and Professor Barry Chevannes; Attitude Shift Specialist,
Dr. Soeresh Gobardhan; Communications Specialist, Dorrett
Campbell, and representatives of the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children Fund
(UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and
the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
The CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Programme and the CARICOM
Commission on Youth Development are part of the CARICOM
Youth Programme, which was established by Caribbean heads of
Government in recognition of the important role young people
must play in regional and national development.
