~~~Memories of Summer Music Camp in Anguilla ~~
October 16, 2007: We are headed home in a few hours
from this year's summer music camp in Anguilla. What can I
say? I had an unbelievable time here in Anguilla and look
forward to coming back for next year's camp. The Anguilla
Tourism Board and everyone else involved (Briggie, James and
Ambrose at Ocean Terrace especially) you made this trip one
for the record books.
Truly I would have to say the most uplifting part of the
trip is seeing the students soak all of the information up
like a sponge. They are going online and researching the
jazz musicians we talked about and talking about the music
and the history. If you ask any student what the elements of
music are they will rattle off "rhythm, harmony, melody,
timbre, texture, form, dynamics." A bunch of students have
posted the summer mantra on their myspace page..."I don't
need nothin' else but health, wealth, and knowledge of
myself."
I am so inspired by their enthusiasm and so uplifted by the
relaxed tempo here in Anguilla that I think I may even be
able to go through the next school semester without
stress... let's hope so.
We are headed back in November for the BET Tranquility Jazz
Fest and are going to showcase the students and all their
hard work for the festival goers. The WES Group is also
going to perform and give the students a taste of dedicated
musicianship and to showcase the talents of the educators
that have taught this great group of students. We had some
great instructors with us this summer (Eric Wheeler - bass,
Joel Holmes - piano, McClenty Hunter - drums, Brian Vickers
- vocal). Oh and thanks Natasha for all your help and
organization, we couldn't have put this trip together
without you. ~WS~
