2008: Anguilla will join five other neighbouring islands
for the 2008 Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC) to
be held in St. Kitts from Thursday February 28th to Sunday
March 2nd. This, the 36th annual competition ,will begin
with Anguilla and Antigua facing off against each other on
the topic “Popular Caribbean culture is the main contributor
to the degradation of West Indian women.” in
elimination one. Elimination two, to be held on the 29th,
will feature Nevis and St. Maarten debating the topic
“Vocational qualification is far more viable than a
university degree.”
Host St. Kitts will meet the winner of elimination one (Anguilla
or Antigua), in the first semifinal on March 1st, dueling on
the topic “US foreign policy is the driving force behind the
terrorist threat to that country.” The second semifinal will
see defending champions Montserrat come up against the
winner of eliminations two (Nevis or St. Maarten) to debate
“Combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean requires
the decriminalization of both homosexuality and the
commercial sex trade.”
Successful semifinalists will meet in the finals on March
2nd, debating the topic “The absentee and/or negligent
father is mainly responsible for the proliferation of gang
activity.”
The LIDC will be hosted by The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant
College and its Literary & Debating Society. The British
Virgin Islands which hopes to join the LIDC fraternity in
2009 will send a small contingent to observe the
proceedings. |
