2007 Education  review - Department celebrates accomplishments.

January 21, 2008: As the New Year starts afresh, the Department of Education deems it necessary to celebrate major accomplishments for the year, 2007.

Thanks to  the purchase of 100 computers by the Government of Anguilla, students on the island now have increased opportunity to become technologically literate. Sixty of the purchased computers were given to the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (A.L.H.C.S), while the remaining forty were shared amongst the six public primary schools. This effort was complemented by a donation of thirty additional computers by Mr. Applewait “Ramee” Lake of Anguilla Masonry Products.

Government’s effort to help improve education also was enhanced through the purchase of four Promethean interactive boards (two by government and two by the governor’s office). Plans are in place to procure additional boards for the upcoming year, so learning can be more interactive.

Government and several community partners have begun repairs on schools through out the island. Those upgrades included installation of new toilets, roof repairs, and improvement of school play grounds. At the Road Primary School, Flags Luxury Properties has played a major role in the upgrade of that school. Campus B’s auditorium came on stream at a highly critical time and has filled a deep void in being the place of accommodation for several school events. Improvements also encompassed several initiatives on teacher and student improvement.

Cognizant of the reading difficulties experienced by some students, six teachers started training in Reading Recovery in September 2007. Mathematics deficiencies were tackled via the creation of a Mathematics club at Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School where students came after school for assistance in weak areas. Another initiative included the introduction of a Virtues Project. This concept was tailored for students, teachers and members of the community to recognize and appreciate values in each other.

The Royal Anguilla Police Service introduced the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) to several Primary schools on the island. The D.A.R.E. program was created to provide information on drug and alcohol abuse. This was conducted in three primary schools from September to November 2007 by Police Constables Shawn Lake and James Joyce.

The highly successful Youth Crime Watch of America was also introduced to the Anguillan youth. The presentation coupled with the disruptive behaviour of some youngsters led to the formation of the Anguilla Youth Crime Watch group at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School. This group was designed for students to report rule infringements to the relevant school authorities.

Overall, many students throughout 2007, engaged in positive performances both academically and in the arts.

During, November 2007, the department held its first Primary Schools national Awards Ceremony for students who excelled in the national Test of Standards.  Awards were given for outstanding performances in areas such as Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Science for grades Three, Five and Six.  Over thirty awards were issued to the top three students in each subject area and the top five in each grade.

Passes in most areas were rather encouraging. However, the number of passes in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics has warranted concern as only a third of the students passed in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exams. Despite the aforementioned efforts, there have been pockets of antisocial behaviour that continually distract from positive strides made by students. These were often in the form of truancy, recalcitrance or a lackadaisical attitude towards work.

The Education Department and all teachers remain committed to providing a quality service to the children of Anguilla.
