January 27, 2007: Former West Indies all-rounder and
Stanford 20/20 legend, Sir Gary Sobers,
has said that he believes Anguilla, as well as their fellow
Pro Teams, St. Lucia and Nevis will to do well in this
year's Stanford 20/20 tournament.
"I wouldn't be surprised if these teams do well this
year. I believe it's going to be far better and a more
keenly contested tournament," added Sobers,
The cricket legend, has expressed the
belief that Nevis in particular could be a surprise
tournament winner. He said that although he has high
respect for the traditional teams – Trinidad & Tobago,
Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica, Nevis, one of four Stanford
Pro Teams, have shown they have the will to win.
"Nevis is a team that did well last year and with their
improvement now, I wouldn't be surprised to see them taking
the trophy," said the 71 year-old Sobers, the greatest
all-rounder of all time.
Sobers, who played 93 Test matches for the West Indies
between 1954 and 1974. He scored
8032 Test runs and took 235 wickets. Sobers had a top-score
of 365 not out.
The Stanford 20/20 tournament, which offers US$1 million
first prize money, bowled off on
Saturday, January 26 with Stanford St Lucia Pro Team
eliminating the Cayman Islands at
the upgraded Stanford Cricket Ground. |
