Debate Team for the LIDC 2008 in St. Kitts

(The Valley, Anguilla) February 16, 2008: In just under 2 weeks, Anguilla will join five other neighbouring islands in the hotly contested Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC).

The 2008 LIDC is scheduled for February 28 – March 2, in St. Kitts and  is being hosted by The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and its Literary & Debating Society.

Teams are expected  to arrive in St. Kitts throughout the day on February 27 and according to sources,  this should include a formidable contingent of team members and individual observers from Anguilla.

Anguilla's 2008 Debating Team  is comprised of,  Sangrena Harris (captain), Quinson Gumbs, Shountae Boothe, Shereena Richardson, Melissa Mussington and Olufunmike Banks-Devonish - all senior students at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School.

Harris and Richardson will get the tournament started on February 28 and should they be successful, they will be followed by Gumbs and Mussington on the 29th. The complete schedule is shown below.

Debate #1: Thursday February 28, 2008, 7:30 p.m.;
Anguilla vs Antigua & Barbuda

Moot: Popular Caribbean culture is the main contributor to the degradation of West Indian women.
Debaters: Sangrena Harris (1st speaker) and Shereena Richardson

Debate #2: Friday February 29, 2008, 7:00 p.m.;
Nevis vs St. Maarten

Moot: Vocational qualification is far more viable than a university degree.

Debate #3: Saturday March 1, 2008, 7:00 p.m.;
St. Kitts vs Winner Debate #1

Moot: US foreign policy is the driving force behind the terrorist threat to that country.
Prospective Debaters: Quinson Gumbs (1st speaker) and Melissa Mussington

Debate #4: Saturday March 1, 2008, 9:00 p.m.;
Montserrat vs Winner Debate # Two

Moot: Combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean requires the decriminalization of both homosexuality and the commercial sex trade.

Debate #5: Sunday March 2, 2008, 7:00 p.m.;
Winner Debate # Three vs Winner Debate # Four

Moot: The absentee and/or negligent father is mainly responsible for the proliferation of gang activity.
Prospective Debaters: Shountae Boothe(1st speaker) and Olufunmike Banks-Devonish
