Dangerous Hurricane Dean plows
through St. Lucia and Martinique
August 17, 2007: Reports from St. Lucia and
Martinique describe ripped roofs, uprooted trees and downed
power lines as the dangerous hurricane Dean
raced through the islands with
winds of 90 - 100mph. In St.
Lucia it has been reported the the corrugated metal roof of
a pediatric ward at Victoria Hospital was blown off, however
no injuries were reported as the patients had already been
evacuated.
Hotels along the coast evacuated their staff and guests and
airports remained closed until the storm passed through.
The Associated Press has reported that a 62-year-old man
attempting to save his cow, drowned in a
swelled-up river to become the storm's first
fatality.
Serious flooding and agricultural damage
has also been reported from Dominica, where unconfirmed
reports also state that at least two persons (a mother and
son) were killed in a storm related mudslide.
As of 8:00pm
on Friday, Dean was upgraded to a Category 3 Hurricane with
further development expected over the next 24h.
Jamaica appears to be directly in the storms projected path.
